Biography
Adam Breen is a writer and creator from Dublin, Ireland, working across comic books, graphic novels, visual storytelling and education. He holds an Honours Degree in English with Film from University College Dublin and a Diploma in Audio and Music Technology from Pulse College Dublin. He has also completed postgraduate studies in Innovation through Design Thinking at University College Cork and a Certificate in Neurodiversity in the Arts and Creative Sector at UCC.
Adam’s work uses science fiction to explore contemporary social, environmental and educational issues. His writing examines scientific progress, power and responsibility through the lenses of social justice, the Rights of Nature, representation and co-creation. Across his creative and research practice, Adam explores visual narrative as both an artistic medium and a mode of inquiry. His work considers how acts of making, storytelling and co-creation can facilitate higher-order thinking, critical reflection, student agency and more inclusive forms of public engagement.
Adam has received multiple awards for his writing, including Darby Pop’s Breaking Into Comics in 2016 and 2017, and Top Cow’s Talent Hunt in 2020. He has also secured competitive funding from major national and international research, education and public engagement bodies, including Research Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland, the European Space Agency and Ireland’s Department of Education.
Alongside his work with comic book publishers, Adam has built an extensive creative and educational practice through collaborations across Ireland’s higher education, further education and cultural sectors. These collaborations reflect a sustained commitment to interdisciplinary storytelling, creative education and public engagement. His recent projects include EIRSAT-1: Ireland’s First Steps Into Space, Harmonic and Chorus, an ongoing STEAM initiative with both national and European dimensions. Across these projects, Adam uses visual storytelling to connect research, education, creativity and student voice.
Adam’s work as a creator, project director and researcher places a strong emphasis on amplifying the voices of young people by encouraging them to read, create, collaborate and communicate. His projects have reached audiences across all levels of education, as well as through museums, media platforms and public-facing cultural spaces, including the Museum of Literature Ireland and RTÉ Home School Hub. Alongside this, he has presented at conferences and delivered talks and workshops on comics, visual storytelling, STEAM engagement, creative practice and the role of narrative in our lives.
